BraveHearts Presents

DECEMBER 10 - 19, 2017

Awaken focuses on two main areas of ministry: providing recovery solutions and guidance for men, women, and couples affected by pornography and sexual addiction; and equipping churches to more effectively shepherd their people through areas related to sexual brokenness.

Stacey's experience as the wife of a sex addict (and a ministry wife as well), and her own recovery journey from betrayal and unhealthy relationship dynamics, has prepared her to walk very closely with other women going through the same trauma.

Stacey is the co-founder (with her husband Greg) of Awaken, a gospel-based sex addiction recovery ministry.

After graduating high school I moved back to the U.S. to attend Bible college, where I met my husband Greg.

I had grown up in a very sheltered environment; so when Greg and I married and were preparing for a life in full-time ministry, I expected smooth sailing. I had no idea that even before we were married Greg was secretly struggling with sexual addiction.

Over the first 17 years of our marriage, it continually got worse, and I had no idea. By the time Greg was exposed in early 2009 he had betrayed me not only with porn, but he had also had sex outside our marriage.

I was devastated and traumatized. That was heightened even more because I was a ministry wife and experienced all the pressures and expectations that came with that.

Greg's exposure was more public because of his position and that created even more trauma.

Yet over the past several years God has faithfully brought healing into my life and marriage through support, therapy, and community.

My story, while unique in some ways, is very much like millions of other women who face the pain, anger, fear, and uncertainty following revelations of what their partners have done.

Their reactions range from wanting to leave the marriage to wanting to take blame for their partner's actions. They experience severe trauma, and many suffer in silence, afraid to let anyone know the story they find so embarrassing. They struggle even to let the leaders within their churches know, fearing how it might be handled.

Greg and I believe sexual brokenness may be the single most effective weapon our enemy uses against Christ's church today.

Awaken exists to help sexually broken men and women understand that they are not alone, they are not outcasts, freaks, defective or deviant, and that they are not beyond restoration.

We offer recovery groups (both locally in Birmingham, Alabama and virtually), therapeutic intensives for male addicts and also for their spouses, personal coaching, assistance in locating qualified therapists, and other resources for people who need recovery.

But we also believe that in order to help everyone understand how the gospel provides hope for people who struggle sexually, we must help our churches' leaders become better informed and equipped to graciously shepherd people whose sexual choices have created trauma and chaos.

In addition to the recovery solutions we provide for individuals and couples, Awaken also works closely with church/ministry leaders through speaking, training, consultation, and long-term ministry partnerships.

I grew up on the mission field, where my parents served in two West African countries.
